We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Settles originated in medieval times as high-backed wooden benches with solid seats and arms, designed to protect occupants from drafts in unheated rooms. They evolved through the centuries, becoming standard seating in farmhouses, cottages, and public houses across Britain.

Traditional settles were constructed using native British timbers such as pine, elm, and oak. Construction typically involved pegged mortise and tenon joints, fielded panels for the backrest, and solid plank seats often shaped from a single slab of timber.

Authentic period settles exhibit hand-planed surfaces, traditional joinery like trunnels or wooden pegs, and natural patination from centuries of use. Signs of age include irregular tool marks, timber shrinkage, and wear patterns around the footrest and armrests.

A high-backed settle functions effectively in hallways, dining areas, or living spaces against a plain wall to highlight its architectural form. Layering the wooden seat with a patterned textile or cushion softens the rigid lines and integrates it into contemporary schemes.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking. Periodic application of microcrystalline wax nourishes the wood and protects the historic finish without causing buildup.
