Large French Enamel Panelled Crystal Regulator Clock 1880s

19th century
For Sale by Arundel Clocks
Description

Hi

I have for sale a very rare large fully gilded with enamel panels1880s French crystal regulator mantel clock that is in stunning condition for the age with an original brass case and fully serviced eight day striking movement run via original pendulum.

This clock is simply stunning the case shines in the sun light and has the most stunning hand painted enamel panels of Chinese figures in the form of a lady one side a man the other and children at play at the front.

The Case

The case is in solid very shiny gilded brass and standing 38cm high x 22cm wide with a depth of 16cm it is in very good original condition very shiny and has been very well looked after over the years.

All panels again are in mint condition.

The Dial

The dial is in original condition with bold gold Roman numerals and the clock set off with the original gilt spade hands.

The Movement

The movement is an eight day time and strike striking the hours and halves on a large sweet bell a real quality movement, which still retains the original key and brass pendulum.

The movement keeps good time over the eight days; just been serviced and running very strong)

All the wheel work is ultra fine the cutting out is of top quality this would have been a very expensive clock back in the day and I think one of the best for sale at the moment by far.

Please do not miss this one you might not see a clock like this again you could wait a very long time to see another ,it is stunning in the flesh.

Overall a very beautiful rare clock in its original condition that’s looking great on display keeping great time.

I will post worldwide at your risk but collection would be best.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French crystal regulator clock is a table or mantel timepiece developed in the late 19th century, characterized by four glass sides that display the internal mechanical movement and pendulum. These clocks often incorporate gilt brass cases, enamel dials, and ornate decorative panels.

These clocks were typically constructed using cast brass, ormolu gilding, bevelled glass panels, and hand-painted ceramic or enamel faces. The mechanical components were forged from steel and brass to ensure precise timekeeping.

Authentic period examples generally feature fine hand-painted enamel detail with subtle surface variations, stamped French movement markings on the back plate, heavy gilt brass frames, and original bevelled glass windows rather than modern plastic or thin sheet glass.

A crystal regulator clock can be placed centrally on a living room mantelpiece, console table, or study desk. Pairing the clock with understated modern accents allows its metallic finish and detailed artwork to function as a focal decorative element.

Dust the exterior casing regularly with a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid using liquid chemical cleaners, polishes, or water on gilt brass or hand-painted enamel panels, as these can strip original patination and delicate painted pigments; mechanical movements require servicing by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
