Drocourt French Grand Sonnerie Repeater Alarm Carriage Clock in the Box with Original Key

19th century
For Sale by Arundel Clocks
Description

Hi

I have for sale an a1880s French striking and repeating Grand sonnerie carriage clock made in France by the makers Drocourt which is signed by them on the back plate of the movement, the clock case has been fully restored the movement has also been fully restored with new springs added and is running strong keeping time and striking correctly with the repeat button on the top all running via the original again restored silvered platform.

The Case

The case is in solid shiny brass and stands 18cm high x 9cm wide with a depth of 8cm it is in original condition with a thick 5mm beveled front/back door and top viewing glass again all in mint condition.

The case is very shiny and hard to photograph they do not do the clock justice at all.

At the base is the lever for silent or quarters or grand Sonnerie all working correctly.

The Dial

The dial is in mint original condition in white porcelain with Roman numerals; the clock also retains its original very fine black moon hands.

The Movement

The movement is an eight-day time and strike which strikes the hours, quarters and halves and three quarters via two blue steel gongs to the rear also has the repeater button on top to repeat the last hour strike, the movement has been fully restored and running and striking 100% correctly.

The clock is stamped Drocourt DC in a circle on the back plate.

This clock also has a fully functional alarm.

The clock also contains Genre stop work to stop over winding a top-quality feature only found on top-end clocks.

At the bottom of the case is a lever for full striking or just hour striking or Silent so you have all three options.

The photos do not do justice to this lovely old clock it comes in the original box with the key.

As with all my clocks, this one is sold with a ‘back-to-base’ 3-month guarantee. I also offer future clock servicing, which I carry out personally at a heavily discounted rate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in France in the early 19th century, carriage clocks were designed as portable timepieces for travellers, featuring sturdy escapements, robust cases, and carrying handles.

These timepieces typically feature gilt-brass cases, bevelled glass panels, white enamel dials, and mechanical movements with platform escapements, strike, or repeat functions.

Authentic examples often display maker marks or serial numbers stamped on the back movement plate, hand-cut gear teeth, mercury gilding, and heavy bevelled glass panels.

Place the timepiece on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or executive office desk alongside structured accessories like leather-bound books or framed prints to enhance a refined aesthetic.

Dust the glass panels gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid applying chemical polishes directly to gilt surfaces, and ensure the internal movement is serviced by a professional horologist.
