George Bullock Card Table

19th century
Description

Early 19th century Regency period card table with simulated rosewood and classical motifs applied to mahogany with mahogany frame and structure, this is an unusually fine table both in design and construction, having exquisite detail to the decoration, totally freestanding with decorated frieze all round, a catch to prevent unintentional rotation (which works in both folded and open positions) and is in very good condition throughout. There are marks to the leather, this can be replaced of course but it is a lovely old skiver and it would be good to keep it on there a bit longer. There are several pieces in museums and books with similar decoration applied in the manner here known to be by Bullock. Click or copy and paste the link below to see a good example of similar applied work. My desert island piece. Attributed to George Bullock, English circa 1815.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency card table is a piece of early 19th-century English furniture crafted with a hinged, fold-over top that swivels or unfolds to reveal a baize-lined surface for card games.

These tables were typically constructed from dark hardwoods such as rosewood and mahogany, often accented with brass, ebony, or timber marquetry inlays and set upon turned pedestals.

Authentic pieces feature signature period details including brass stringing, scroll inlay motifs, quadripartite bases with sabre legs or scrolled feet, and original brass castors.

When folded closed, the table functions as a console along a hallway or behind a sofa, where it can be styled with contemporary lamps, artwork, or decorative ceramics.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer movement, dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying beeswax sparingly along the grain.
