A washstand is a piece of furniture designed to hold a basin and jug for washing before the widespread availability of indoor plumbing, becoming particularly ornate and varied during the Victorian era.

Washstands were typically crafted from sturdy hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, and walnut, often featuring figured veneers like plum pudding mahogany for decorative drawer fronts and gallery upstands.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional timber shrinkage, historical fixings, and high-quality secondary woods consistent with 19th-century cabinet making techniques.

An antique washstand can be repurposed as a hallway console, a compact desk, or a distinctive bathroom vanity, contrasting its traditional rich wood grain with modern minimalist decor.

Preserve antique mahogany by maintaining stable room humidity away from direct heat sources, cleaning gently with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to protect the polished surface.
