Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century French gilt mirrors are recognised by carved wooden frames overlaid with gesso moulding and finished in hand-applied gold leaf. They frequently feature classical architectural details such as acanthus leaf moulding, corner spandrels, and egg-and-dart borders surrounding silvered or mercury glass plates.

Traditional gilt mirrors were constructed using a hand-carved pine or oak wooden core covered with layers of gesso plaster. Gold leaf was applied over a coloured clay base known as bole, while the mirror plate was crafted using silvered or mercury glass.

Authentic period gilt mirrors show evidence of hand craftsmanship, including joint lines in the wooden backboard and subtle wear to the gold leaf that exposes the underlying red or grey bole. Original mirror glass typically exhibits natural age marks, silver loss, or foxing consistent with period production.

A French gilt mirror can be positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece or console table to create a focal point. Its warm metallic tones and classical ornamentation provide a balanced visual contrast when paired alongside clean contemporary architecture and modern furnishings.

Clean the gilded frame using only a soft, dry feather duster or dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid using water, liquid chemical cleaners, or commercial solvents, as moisture can dissolve the water-gilding adhesive and permanently damage the gesso surface.
