Satsuma ware originated in the Satsuma province of southern Kyushu during the late sixteenth century. By the nineteenth-century Meiji period, production expanded significantly to cater to Western export markets, developing a distinct style marked by intricate hand-painted enamels, gilding, and figural narratives.

Satsuma ceramics are made from a low-fired earthenware clay body covered in a clear lead glaze that forms a finely crazed or crackled surface. Decoration is applied over the glaze using lead-based enamels and gold leaf gilding before a final low-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces display a characteristic yellowish or ivory body beneath a uniformly fine crackle glaze. Period examples feature heavy, hand-applied gilt work and complex enamel detailing, often accompanied by maker signatures or Shimazu crest marks painted on the underside.
