Satsuma pottery originates from Kagoshima prefecture in Japan and gained global recognition during the Meiji period (18681912) for its detailed overglaze enamel work, crackle glazes, and intricate gilt decoration on light earthenware bodies.

Satsuma ware is constructed from cream-coloured earthenware featuring a clear, finely crackled glaze. The surfaces are decorated with polychrome enamel pigments and gold leaf or gilt paint before being fired in secondary low-temperature kilns.
