Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Satsuma ware originated in the Satsuma province of southern Japan during the late 16th century, evolving into an export ceramic style during the Meiji period (18681912). It is recognised by its distinctive yellowish or cream earthenware body, crackled glaze, and detailed overglaze enamel and gilt decorations.

Satsuma sleeve vases were constructed from light-coloured earthenware clay molded into cylindrical form, often imitating bamboo stalks. They were coated in a clear lead glaze that developed a crackle effect upon firing, then hand-painted with polychrome enamel pigments and finished with gilded highlights.

Authentic Meiji period pieces display precise, dense miniature brushwork, heavy raised enamel gilding, and a distinct crackled glaze beneath the decoration. Collectors should check the base for painted maker signatures, factory marks, or the Shimazu family crest, which resembles a cross within a circle.

Place a Satsuma sleeve vase on a polished dark wood sideboard, console table, or alcove shelf to create a visual focal point. Its warm neutral ground and intricate detailing allow it to complement both classic heritage decor and minimalist contemporary spaces.

Clean Satsuma ceramics using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft camel-hair brush to remove dust. Avoid immersing earthenware in water or applying abrasive chemical polishers, as moisture can penetrate the crackled glaze and dissolve soluble gilding or enamel overglaze.
