Martlesham Antiques is a family run business and has been trading since 1984. Located in Suffolk just outside Woodbridge, Martlesham Antiques is run from a spacious thatched cottage housing nine large showrooms with a vast adjacent car park.

Specialising in 18th and 19th Century furniture, together with creating custom hand-made furniture which is supplied to various interior designers, trade and the retail market. Every piece on the showroom floor is in excellent condition and ready to go straight into the buyers home or premises.

All of Martlesham Antiques furniture is hand polished by their own French polishers and restorers to a very high standard. We are also a member of LAPADA, the association of art and antiques.

Tripod tables emerged in the early 18th century as versatile tea and wine tables. Crafted predominantly from imported mahogany, they features three cabriole legs and often a tilt-top mechanism allowing them to be stored flat against a wall when not in use.

These tables were constructed from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, known for its dense grain and durability. The legs were traditionally joined to a turned central column using dovetailed bearer blocks, while the tops were often carved from a single piece of timber with hand-carved scalloped moulding.

Authentic period examples feature hand-carved piecrust rims rather than applied mouldings, iron or brass tilt catches, and subtle asymmetry from hand-planing. The underside of the table top should show natural oxidisation and shrinkage aligned with the timber grain.
