Antique Georgian 18th Century Figured Mahogany Circular Tilt Top Lamp Table

18th century
Description

A fine Georgian figured mahogany circular tilt top table raised on a well proportioned turned pedestal with elegant tripod cabriole legs. The top displays a rich warm tone with attractive figuring showing the natural character and depth that only period mahogany develops over time.

The tilt top mechanism allowed the table to be stored upright when not in use, a practical feature in Georgian homes where space and flexibility were valued. These tables were commonly used as supper or occasional tables, easily brought out for dining, tea or entertaining, then neatly set aside.

The proportions are particularly pleasing, with a sturdy yet refined base and a generously sized top, making it highly versatile for modern interiors as a centre, lamp or occasional table.

Condition Report:

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in 18th-century England, tilt-top tripod tables were designed as versatile occasional furniture for tea drinking and social gatherings. Their tilting mechanisms allowed them to be stored flat against room walls when not in use, displaying the highly figured wood grain as a decorative surface.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid dense mahogany, often featuring figured or flame veneers on the top surface. The internal tilt block, central turned column, and splayed legs were carved from mahogany, secured with hand-wrought iron or brass latch mechanisms.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetails on the underside tilt block, hand-turned pedestals, and original brass or hand-forged iron latches. The underside of the table top usually exhibits hand-planed marks and irregular, age-appropriate shrinkage across the timber grain.

Place the table beside an armchair or sofa as an occasional side table for lighting and books. Alternatively, tilt the top vertically and position the piece in an empty alcove or corner to highlight the natural timber figure as sculptural art.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry microfiber cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the original patination. Position the table away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement, cracking, or fading.
