Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An 18th-century French serpentine commode is a low chest of drawers featuring an undulating front profile shaped like an S curve. Originating in the Rococo period under Louis XV, these pieces typically combine carved timber drawer fronts, decorative brass or ormolu mounts, and fitted marble slabs on top.

French Louis XV commodes were primarily constructed using native woods such as walnut, oak, cherry, or fruitwood, alongside imported mahogany or marquetry veneers. They were capped with thick, contoured marble slabs and trimmed with cast brass or gilt-bronze drawer pulls and escutcheons.

Authentic 18th-century French commodes demonstrate hand-planed timber surfaces, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, and original chiselled iron locks. The marble tops often show hand-chiselled undersides and natural surface wear consistent with age.

Place a French serpentine commode as an anchor piece in an entryway or living space, balancing its elaborate woodwork with a minimal contemporary mirror or large abstract artwork hanging above it. Keep tabletop styling refined using neutral ceramic vessels or simple brass lighting.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a beeswax polish annually following the grain of the timber. Clean the marble top using only pH-neutral water and soap, avoiding acidic cleaners that can etch or dull the natural stone finish.
