Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 18th century during the reign of Louis XV, French commodes evolved from earlier chest designs to become central features of refined interiors. Characterised by asymmetrical curves, bombe silhouettes, intricate wood marquetry, and opulent gilt-bronze mounts, these pieces prioritised both functional storage and ornamental artistry.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid oak or fruitwood frames overlaid with fine exotic wood veneers such as kingwood, tulipwood, and rosewood. Tops were shaped from thick slabs of natural marble, while decorative hardware and protective corner mounts were cast from bronze and finished with fire-gilding or heavy polishing.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, unpolished structural backs showing hand-saw marks, and heavy, hand-chased brass or bronze mounts. Inspecting the underside of the marble top often reveals traditional hand-chiseled undersurfaces rather than modern machine cuts.

A bombe commode functions as a focal architectural anchor in entryways, formal dining spaces, or bedrooms. Pairing its ornate woodwork and marble surface with minimalist wall art or clean-lined contemporary lighting creates a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern design.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply high-grade beeswax sparingly to the wood veneer to maintain hydration. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners on gilt-bronze fittings to protect original patination, and use pH-neutral stone cleaner to protect the marble surface from acidic spills.
