A spectacular French kingwood commode with original marble top. This antique commode has three long drawers, chamfered corners with applied ormolu decoration, this is repeated on the shaped front legs and base of the commode. The standard of craftsmanship is extremely high as can be seen in the stunning sunburst design on the sides. The condition is very good.

This high quality commode would be equally at home in the hall, sitting room or bedroom.

The French commode developed during the late 17th and early 18th centuries as a low, wide chest of drawers designed to replace traditional trunks. They became focal storage furniture in French salons and bedrooms, often featuring marble tops to protect the delicate wood veneering beneath.

These pieces typically feature an oak or soft timber carcass covered in cut kingwood or rosewood veneers arranged in parquetry patterns. They are finished with a shaped marble top slab and chased gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts.
