Pair of Highly Decorative Early 20th Century French Kingwood Bombe Commodes

1900 - 1920
Description

A pair of highly decorative early 20th century (circa 1910) French Kingwood bombe commodes.

This pair of commodes consist of serpentine shaped and moulded faux marble tops finished in a blue vein painted marble effect.

Each commode having two drawers with central Kingwood and tulipwood floral marquetry oval panel of a vase of flowers surrounded by ebony and boxwood stringing with parquetry trellis decoration with ebony and boxwood geometric stringing with an outer tulip crossbanding.

The drawers each with gilt metal Rococo style handles, escutcheon to the top drawer, foliate central mount to the lower drawer with shaped apron below of tulip crossbanding.

The corners having gilt metal Rococo style mounts to the top with further mounts running down the legs terminating with a mount to the front feet.

The sides each with parquetry inlaid trellis decoration with ebony and boxwood geometric stringing and outswept legs to the back.

The tops are made from wood and finished in a blue vein marbled paint effect, this pair of commodes previously owned by an English film hire company, these companies preferring to use wooden tops as the marble ones could easily be damaged.

This pair of commodes are in very good condition for age, are of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

Please note: the items photographed on the commodes are not included in the list price.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French bombe commode features a convex outward-curving front and side profile, typical of 18th-century Rococo design and its 19th and 20th-century revivals. Originating in France, these pieces are characterised by sweeping cabriole legs, rich veneers, ornate brass or bronze mounts, and fitted marble tops.

These pieces traditionally feature hardwood frames faced with decorative veneers such as kingwood, rosewood, or tulipwood arranged in marquetry or parquetry patterns. Surfaces are frequently dressed with heavy gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and capped with shaped marble slabs.

Authentic revival pieces display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, cast metal mounts with traces of hand-chasing, and natural age-related patination on the timber and brassware. The underside and back boards typically show saw marks consistent with period woodworking tools rather than modern machine finishes.

A pair of bombe commodes works effectively when positioned symmetrically as bedside tables in a master bedroom or flanking a grand doorway in a hallway. Pairing them with contemporary table lamps or a minimalist mirror creates a sophisticated contrast between traditional craft and modern design.

Clean the timber surfaces using a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste sparingly to protect the wood grain and marquetry. Wipe marble tops with a damp cloth using neutral pH detergent, avoiding acidic substances that can etch or dull the polished surface.
