Satsuma ware originated in the Satsuma province of Japan during the late sixteenth century and is characterised by a cream-coloured earthenware body with a fine crackle glaze, decorated with detailed polychrome enamels and gilding.

Traditional Satsuma pieces are crafted from low-fired earthenware clay, finished with a translucent lead glaze that crackles during cooling, and hand-painted using overglaze mineral enamels and liquid gold leaf.

Authentic pieces feature a distinct yellowish-cream earthenware base, fine micro-crackling throughout the glaze, raised enamel paintwork, and often carry Japanese shimazu crests or maker marks painted on the base.

Place the vessel on a sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece where light highlights the detailed hand-painted scenes and metallic gilding, contrasting well with neutral backdrops.

Dust the surface gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth; avoid immersing the earthenware in water or using abrasive liquid cleaners, as moisture can penetrate the crackle glaze and damage overglaze gilding.
