Produced during the mid-to-late 19th century, French Napoleon III mirrors feature elaborate giltwood or gesso frames adorned with floral cresting, urn finials, and classical revival motifs.

These mirrors were constructed using carved timber frames layered with plaster gesso before gold leaf gilding was applied, housing original hand-blown glass plates with timber backboards.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit red or grey clay bole visible beneath worn gold leaf, oxidisation or foxing on the glass silvering, and backboards secured with historic cut nails.
