Antique Kuba Soumac

19th century
Description

Rare to find an antique Kuba Soumac in such pristine condition, coming from a private collection it has been loved and looked after. With original end ties at both ends, and in excellent condition all over this special piece.  Rather than bold repeating medallions in the centre design, we have this all over, intricate diamond pattern on the famous yellow background colour.  A favourite dye used by the Kuba weavers, often used in rugs and runners.  The detail and weave is expertly created.

A Soumac, unlike a Kilim can not be used on both sides, as the wool on the back is not clipped and this actually aids them and makes them stronger than kilims.  The Soumac is a type of brocading, with a flat-weave pile, looping the wool around the warps and over the wefts, this creates a raised flat-weave pile on the rug.  It is an amazing, complicated technique and make them very durable.  Hence this Soumac dates from circa 1880-1890, used on the floor for its life, it shows with care how tough and decorative these pieces can be.

Kuba is a rug producing town located in the north-east of the Caucaus next to the Caspian Sea. The port of Baku in Kuba had its own school for carpet-making.  An amazing and collectable Caucasian Soumac with a great design and a fantastic array of early natural colours.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Kuba Soumac rug is a specific type of flat-weave textile produced in the eastern Caucasus region, famous for its intricate supplementary-weft wrapping technique that creates a smooth surface and extra warmth.

These rugs are crafted entirely from natural wool yarns for both the structural warp and weft as well as the decorative brocading threads, often dyed using local plant-based and mineral pigments.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible loose, unwoven yarn ends across the reverse side, complex geometric border systems, fine brocaded flat-weave texture, and subtle colour variations known as abrash.

A vibrant geometric flat-weave adds warmth and structural contrast when placed on neutral timber floors, anchoring seating areas in contemporary, traditional, or eclectic room schemes.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush attachment prevents fiber damage, whilst professional specialist dry cleaning and a quality rug underlay protect the delicate flat-weave construction.
