Antique Caucasian Marasali prayer rug of the scarce 'yellow' ground colour.

Circa 1850 or earlier.

This outstanding rug belongs to a scarce group of yellow ground prayer rugs with a diamond lattice. Another closely related example is published as part of, 'The Oriental Rug Collection of Jerome and Mary Jane Straka', item 104, page 108; gifted to the Textile Museum 1977.36.48.

The rug is in excellent condition with even wear and medium pile.

The rug has been hand washed and ready for use or display, the rug is suitable for light domestic use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Marasali prayer rugs are traditional hand-knotted textiles originating from the Shirvan region in the eastern Caucasus. They typically feature a pointed arch motif known as a mihrab, framed by intricate lattice grids containing stylised floral or boteh elements.

These rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation structure. The distinct palette, including yellows, reds, and blues, is achieved through natural plant-based and mineral dyes.

Authentic 19th century examples display hand-bound selvages, slight irregularities in the hand-spun wool, and natural dye variation known as abrash. They feature high knot density with a fine wool pile and authentic geometric motifs specific to the Caucasus region.

A Caucasian prayer rug can be used as a focal point on polished wooden floors, hung as a decorative textile wall artwork, or layered over neutral flat-weave carpets in traditional or contemporary settings.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only attachment without a rotary brush to protect the natural fibres and fringes. Rotate the carpet periodically to ensure even wear and light exposure, and undertake professional spot cleaning using non-alkaline solutions.
