Antique Caucasian Ivory Ground Shirvan Prayer Rug with Floral Lattice, Circa 1870.

19th century
For Sale by Cotswold Oriental Rugs (Reserved for a buyer)
Description

Size: 5ft 8in x 3ft 10in (172 x 116cm).

Antique Caucasian Shirvan prayer rug with floral lattice on an ivory ground.

Circa 1870

A good early example of this well known group of prayer rugs with a very well drawn lattice containing flowering shrubs on an ivory ground. The rug is very well drawn with good colour and a spacious feel to the lattice that is associated with earlier examples. The multi coloured borders of traditional Shirvan designs frame the rug well.

The rug is in good condition with slight even wear and medium pile, there are a few scattered old repairs which are hard to detect.

Hand washed and ready for use or display, the rug would make a superb wall hanging.

Stock Number: H-546.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the Shirvan region in the Eastern Caucasus during the 19th century, these hand-knotted rugs are recognised for their geometric design structure, central arched mihrab motifs, and finely detailed decorative borders.

Traditional Shirvan rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced wool pile woven onto a wool foundation, utilising natural dyes derived from plants and minerals to create distinct colour palettes.

Authentic pieces feature natural dye variations known as abrash, symmetrical hand-tied knots, wool wrap and weft construction, and specific regional iconography such as stepped arches and diamond lattice patterns.

An antique Caucasian rug can serve as a focal point on polished wooden floors, be layered over neutral natural-fibre carpeting, or mounted on a wall as an art textile in both traditional and contemporary settings.

Preserve antique wool rugs by vacuuming gently without a rotating beater bar, rotating regularly to distribute foot traffic evenly, using an underlay pad, and consulting professional rug restorers for cleaning.
