How do I clean a wrought iron hearth set?

Remove loose soot and ash with a dry brush before applying a light coat of protective paste wax or oil to prevent surface oxidation. Avoid abrasive scouring pads that can strip the historic finish and expose raw metal to moisture.

Are these tools suitable for active fires?

Most pieces were built specifically for managing wood and coal fires, utilising durable iron and steel construction. Heavier companion sets and fire baskets handle high temperatures well, provided they receive routine maintenance and proper care.

How can I date a Victorian hearth set?

Examine the manufacturing marks, assembly methods, and stylistic cues such as Gothic Revival or Edwardian motifs. Nineteenth-century examples frequently display heavier cast components and hand-finished wrought details distinct from later production.

What is the difference between fire irons and a companion set?

Fire irons traditionally refer to the individual pokers, tongs, and shovels used to tend the hearth. A companion set is a complete grouping of these tools, often accompanied by a dedicated stand or holder for display.
