How do I choose the right size?

Measure your floor space carefully and allow room for chairs to pull out or drawers to open fully without obstruction. Consider the primary function of the room to decide whether a compact bedside cabinet or a large dining table suits your layout.

What woods were commonly used?

Makers utilised native and imported timbers including mahogany, walnut, oak and pine across different centuries. Hardwoods like mahogany and walnut frequently appear in formal reception rooms, while pine and fruitwood served utility roles in kitchens and bedrooms.

How do I care for timber surfaces?

Keep wooden furniture away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent the timber from drying out or warping. Apply suitable wax polish periodically to maintain the lustre and feed the grain of older polished finishes.

Are the drawers usually original?

Most pieces retain their original fitted drawers constructed during the initial period of manufacture. Examine the interior timber and joint construction to understand the age and authenticity of the drawer boxes.
