What is a wooden correspondence box used for?

These boxes served to organise incoming and outgoing mail, letters and writing paper on a desk or table. They kept correspondence private and tidy in homes and offices. Larger versions accommodated envelopes and blotting paper, while smaller letter boxes stood ready to receive daily post.

How do I date a wooden correspondence box?

Dating relies on timber choices, brass hardware styles and construction techniques visible in the carcass. Mahogany and rosewood point towards Georgian and Victorian eras, while oak often signals earlier or Arts and Crafts periods. Secondary woods, lock types and interior layouts help narrow the decade of manufacture.

Where should I place one in my home?

A correspondence box sits well on a desk, hall table or bookcase where it can store modern letters, notebooks or stationery. Compact versions fit easily on smaller surfaces. Keeping the box in a stable environment away from direct heat sources protects the polished timber and delicate veneers.
