How do I hang wooden wall sconces?

Wall sconces require secure fixings into wall studs or suitable wall plugs to support the weight of the timber and metal components. Check the backplate or hanging loops to determine the correct bracket or screw placement. Ensure the fixture hangs level and sits flush against the wall surface to prevent movement when placing or removing candles.

Are these suitable for everyday use?

Most antique wooden candle holders accommodate standard taper candles, though older bores may require slight trimming of the candle base for a snug fit. Brass bobeches or drip pans catch melting wax to protect the surrounding wood. Extinguish candles before they burn down near the wooden socket to prevent heat damage or scorching to the antique timber.

How do I clean antique wooden candle holders?

Dust the timber gently with a soft, dry cloth to remove surface particles without disturbing the finish. Avoid liquid polishes or harsh chemical cleaners that can degrade aged wax or varnish. Remove wax drips carefully using a plastic scraper once the wax has hardened completely, taking care not to scratch the wood or gilt surface.

What is the difference between a candlestick and a sconce?

Candlesticks are freestanding objects designed to stand on tables, mantelpieces, or chests. They feature flat bases for stability on horizontal surfaces. Sconces are specifically designed to mount vertically onto walls, projecting light outward into the room from a fixed backing plate.
