What is a compactum wardrobe?

A compactum wardrobe is a large multi-functional storage piece that integrates hanging space, shelving, and drawers into one unified cabinet. These items became popular when bedrooms required comprehensive storage solutions within a single footprint. They often include mirrored doors and internal compartments designed for specific garments. Their substantial size makes them suitable as a primary wardrobe in a master bedroom.

How do I tell a Georgian chest from a Victorian one?

Georgian chests of drawers typically display proportions and timber selections characteristic of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, such as figured mahogany and delicate bracket feet. They frequently incorporate cockbeading around the drawer edges and hand-cut dovetail joints. Victorian chests tend to be heavier in scale with turned feet, bolder drawer configurations like two-over-three arrangements, and occasionally pine carcasses. The choice of handles and interior linings also helps separate the earlier Georgian craftsmanship from later nineteenth-century production.

Where were bedside cabinets placed?

Bedside cabinets, also known as night lockers or bedside tables, stood immediately adjacent to the bed to hold small personal items needed during the night. They provided enclosed cupboard space or drawer storage within easy reach. In period rooms, matching pairs often flanked the bed, though single bedside tables also appear. They coordinate with the larger wardrobe and chest of drawers in matching timber.

What is burr walnut veneer?

Burr walnut veneer is a thin slice of wood cut from the growth warts or burls of a walnut tree, revealing a swirling, highly figured grain pattern. Cabinet makers applied these decorative veneers to the primary surfaces of chests and wardrobes to create visual impact. This technique highlights the natural variation of the wood rather than a uniform grain. It appears on pieces from the Edwardian period and the 1920s Art Deco era.
