Why did artists paint on wood panels instead of canvas?

Wood panels offered a completely rigid and durable surface that appealed to painters working outdoors or creating smaller cabinet-sized works. This solid support prevented the tears and laxity common to stretched fabrics. panels also accepted fine preparatory grounds like gesso, allowing for meticulous detail in landscape depictions.

How do I care for an antique wood panel painting?

Keep the painting away from direct heat sources and dramatic fluctuations in relative humidity to prevent the wooden support from warping or splitting over time. Displaying the piece in a stable environment ensures the paint layer remains secure. Dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid liquid cleaners or moisture on exposed timber or gilt frames.

Are all wood panel paintings signed by the artist?

Many historical panels remain unsigned, particularly those originating from provincial or naive traditions where makers recorded local views without seeking personal renown. Indistinct signatures also occur frequently due to age or subsequent cleaning. Attributions for unsigned works rely upon style, subject matter, and regional school characteristics recorded in historical archives.

What subjects are typical in wood panel landscapes?

Common subjects include river valleys, agricultural fields with windmills, pastoral scenes with figures, and coastal harbours featuring boats. Artists frequently drew inspiration from British, French, and Italian countryside views. These compositions range from intimate miniature studies to detailed regional topography recorded during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
