What periods do these pine drawers come from?

The available selection spans the nineteenth century up to the early twentieth century, with a strong representation of Victorian examples. Porter and maker dates cluster around the Victorian era, particularly the eighteen-seventies and eighteen-eighties, alongside occasional later pieces from the nineteen-twenties.

How do pitch pine and standard pine differ?

Pitch pine contains higher resin content, which gives the timber a heavier weight and a more pronounced, striated grain pattern. Standard pine tends to be lighter in hue and softer in density. Both materials were utilised for practical furniture, but pitch pine offers a distinct warmth and resilience favoured in utilitarian and maritime contexts.

What is a scumbled pine finish?

Scumbling involves applying a darker glaze over a lighter painted base and working the surface with tools to create mottled or figured patterns. This technique was often used to simulate exotic hardwoods. On Victorian pine furniture, it provided an affordable way to achieve a decorative, textured finish that protected the wood underneath.

How were banks of drawers used originally?

Banks of drawers served as functional filing and storage units in offices, shops, apothecaries, and collectors' rooms. Their numerous small compartments kept specific items organised and accessible. Today, these utilitarian pieces transfer easily into domestic settings as statement storage units for smaller household goods.
