What is a cellarette?

A cellarette is a traditional storage chest designed to hold wine bottles securely near the dining table. These pieces often feature fitted interiors to keep bottles separated. Historically, they allowed hosts to keep wine close at hand without summoning servants constantly. Today, they serve a similar functional purpose while adding period presence to a room.

How do I clean a mahogany wine cooler?

Cleaning requires a soft, dry cloth to remove dust from the timber surfaces and brass fittings. Avoid modern chemical sprays that can damage older finishes. Applying a traditional beeswax polish periodically helps nourish the mahogany and preserve its depth of colour. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources to prevent the wood from splitting.

Can I store modern wine bottles in these cabinets?

Many older cellarettes and storage boxes feature fixed internal partitions designed for historical bottle dimensions. Standard modern bottles may occasionally exceed these older clearances. French bottle cages and open racks generally accommodate standard contemporary bottle shapes easily. Checking the internal layout ensures your preferred bottle sizes fit comfortably.

How do I date a Georgian wine cooler?

Georgian pieces typically showcase solid mahogany and hand-cut dovetails. Subtle details such as brass ring handles, tapered legs, or sarcophagus proportions offer further clues to the decade of manufacture. Comparing these elements with documented examples confirms the era.
