Sets typically include pairs or trios of decanters, sometimes accompanied by matching wine glasses, coasters, or identifying silver labels. They offer a unified appearance for a dining table or sideboard, reflecting the period's preference for matched serving vessels.

How old are these pieces?

The items span from the Georgian era through the Victorian and Edwardian periods, stretching into the early twentieth century. Specific dates depend on the style of cutting, the hallmarks on any silver components, and the overall manufacturing technique.

Vintage glass requires careful hand washing in warm water with mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes to prevent cracking. Silver labels and coasters need appropriate metal polish applied gently to preserve the hallmarks and chased details.

Are the stoppers original?

Stoppers are matched to the necks by hand grinding during production, making original pairs desirable for collectors. Checking the fit and matching number marks helps confirm whether a stopper belongs to its specific decanter.

What is Old Sheffield Plate?

Old Sheffield Plate is an early composite material made by fusing a thin sheet of silver to a thicker copper base. This technique produced durable serving items and coasters before the invention of electroplating in the nineteenth century.
