What is a tallboy chest?

A tallboy is a stacked chest of drawers, often constructed in two separate sections to ease movement. These pieces maximise vertical capacity while occupying minimal floor space in a bedroom.

How do Wellington chests work?

Wellington chests use a hinged vertical locking timber on one side that fastens over the drawer edges. Securing this bar with a key locks the entire stack of drawers at once.

Where should I place a tall chest?

These chests suit bedrooms, dressing rooms, and narrow hallways where floor space is restricted. Their height allows substantial storage without crowding the room.

What woods were used for vintage chests?

Makers constructed these pieces predominantly in mahogany, oak, and walnut, often using burr walnut and satinwood for decorative effect. Pile and painted pine also appear in utility and office contexts.
