What were vintage silver keepsake boxes used for?

These boxes served multiple domestic purposes, holding everything from snuff and tobacco to pins, cufflinks, and precious jewellery. They sat on dressing tables, desks, and sideboards as both practical storage and decorative objects. Over time, owners repurposed them for modern keepsakes, rosaries, and pills while maintaining their original placement in private rooms.

How can I tell an Edwardian box from a Victorian one?

Victorian boxes often display heavier ornamentation with deep floral repoussé work and substantial rosewood or mahogany carcases. Edwardian examples frequently lean towards lighter neoclassical motifs, slender ribbons, and satinwood or oak linings. Examining the hallmarks, where present, provides the definitive date of manufacture and confirms the assay office.

Are all vintage silver keepsake boxes solid silver?

Many boxes combine solid sterling silver lids or mounts with wooden bodies made from oak, ebonised timber, or burr maple. Other pieces utilise silver plate over base metals or feature decorative elements in enamel and tortoiseshell. Checking the hallmarks on the metal components reveals whether the piece is solid silver or plated.

How do I care for a silver and tortoiseshell box?

Silver components require gentle polishing with a dedicated cloth, taking care to avoid contact with any wooden or tortoiseshell surfaces. Tortoiseshell and enamel need protection from direct sunlight, extreme heat, and harsh chemical cleaners. Storing the box in a stable environment prevents the organic materials from warping or shrinking away from the silver mounts.
