What is a side drawer desk?

A side drawer desk is a compact writing table or side table fitted with one or more drawers beneath the top surface. These tables provide a dedicated surface for writing while keeping stationery stored close at hand. They appear in various woods like oak, mahogany, and walnut across multiple periods from the eighteenth century to the nineteen-thirties.

How do I date a wooden desk?

Dating a wooden desk involves examining the timber species, construction methods, and hardware styles. Earlier pieces often display hand-cut joinery and native timbers like oak or walnut. Twentieth-century examples introduce alternative styling such as Art Deco forms or lighter pine construction while retaining traditional drawer configurations.

Where should I place a side table with drawers?

These versatile tables fit comfortably in studies, living rooms, hallways, or bedrooms where surface space and subtle storage are required. Their compact proportions allow them to function as writing desks or serving tables against interior walls. Placing them away from direct heat sources helps preserve the stability of solid timber and applied veneers.

Are these desks suitable for daily work?

Many vintage writing tables and small desks provide adequate surface area and knee clearance for laptop use or paperwork. The integrated drawers accommodate pens, paper, and small accessories. Selecting a piece depends on matching the desk height and drawer configuration to your specific daily requirements.
