What periods do these prints cover?

The collection spans the eighteenth century through to the mid-twentieth century, encompassing Georgian, Regency, Victorian and Edwardian eras. Pieces record subjects from early royal figures to First World War caricatures. Specific dates on listings range from 1794 portraits to 1950 printed cards, reflecting shifts in military dress and artistic techniques over time.

How were these works originally framed?

Many items retain their original wooden enclosures, predominantly constructed from oak with fitted glass to protect the fragile paper beneath. These frames often show period characteristics such as simple mouldings or gilt accents. Preservation varies, so buyers frequently examine the backboards and mount materials to determine if the framing is contemporary to the artwork.

Who created these military prints?

Works are produced by notable engravers and artists, including John Simon, Edward Fisher and John Smith copying painters like Sir Joshua Reynolds and Michael Dahl. Twentieth-century examples feature signed pieces by artists like Snaffles and Sir Muirhead Bone. Attributions appear in the plate inscriptions or signatures, linking the printed image directly to historical draughtsmen and publishers.

Are these works original or reproductions?

The selection comprises original period printings, hand-coloured watercolours, pen and ink drawings and authentic lithographs rather than modern photographic copies. Each item reflects the printing technology and artistic output of its specific era. Mediums such as mezzotint and wood engraving carry the physical impressions of the original plates and blocks used during production.

How do I care for a framed print?

Keep framed paper works away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of inks and watercolours. Maintain stable indoor humidity levels to protect both the paper support and the antique wooden frame. Avoid hanging pieces in damp environments like kitchens or bathrooms to safeguard the card and backing materials against moisture damage.
