What is a vesta case?

A vesta case is a small, hinged container made to hold matches safely in a pocket or handbag. They gained immense popularity during the Victorian era when vestas, an early type of match, required protection from dampness. The bottom of the case usually incorporates a textured area for striking the match before use. Many examples feature ornate silver engraving or enamel crests.

How do glass match strikers work?

Glass match strikers feature heavy, threaded or textured exterior surfaces designed to create enough friction to ignite safety matches. The match is scraped directly against the glass body of the pot. These heavy pieces sat on dining tables, desks, or smoking stands in Edwardian homes. The glass container kept matches contained while the silver mount provided a decorative rim.

How should I clean a silver vesta?

Silver vesta cases benefit from gentle cleaning with a soft cloth to preserve the engraved details and hallmarks. Harsh polishes can wear away delicate surface decoration and remove desirable patination. Glass and ceramic match strikers can be washed cautiously in warm soapy water. Care must be taken around enamel panels and painted details to avoid moisture damage.
