How were tea caddies used?

Tea caddies were kept in the drawing room to store valuable tea leaves safely away from domestic staff and damp air. Households often locked the container, and the lady of the house kept the key to control access to this expensive commodity.

What is Tunbridge ware?

Tunbridge ware refers to wooden items decorated with mosaic patterns made from many tiny pieces of naturally coloured local woods. Craftsmen arranged these tiny wooden squares to depict flowers, butterflies, or geometric borders on small boxes.

How do I date these boxes?

Dating relies on observing the underlying timber choices, construction methods, and stylistic influences present in the woodwork. Earlier Georgian pieces often display simpler mahogany or satinwood veneers, while Victorian examples frequently utilise heavier walnut or rosewood with complex marquetry.

Where should I place a box?

These containers suit display on sideboards, coffee tables, or desks where their detailed wood surfaces remain visible. Keeping them away from direct sunlight and severe temperature changes helps protect the delicate veneers and old finishes.
