How were steamer trunks used?

Steamer trunks served as primary luggage for passengers boarding ocean liners and trains during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Their shallow profile allowed them to slide underneath passenger berths. Inside these trunks, travellers packed garments, personal items, and books needed for long journeys. Robust exterior materials protected the contents from rough handling during transit.

What is a campaign case?

Their design prioritised portability and structural resilience under harsh travel conditions. Today, these pieces function as distinctive coffee tables or storage chests.

How do I date a luggage chest?

Dating relies on materials, construction techniques, and hardware styles found on the trunk. Earlier nineteenth century pieces often display heavy timber frames and hand-beaten iron fittings, while Edwardian and nineteen twenties examples incorporate stamped canvas and specialised interior trays. Maker stamps and labels provide definitive chronological markers. Patents stamped onto brass locks also narrow down the period of manufacture.
