Buyers appreciate this practical fastening because it combines period charm with reliable modern-style retention.

What periods do these earrings represent?

The selection includes Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, and 1950s examples. Each era brings distinct metal choices and gemstone cuts to the hinge back format. Early pieces often feature platinum-topped gold with old cut diamonds, while later mid-century versions showcase colourful stones and clean geometric lines.

Can I wear dormeuse earrings overnight?

While historical dormeuse earrings were designed for continuous wear including sleep, modern owners generally remove them to protect delicate antique settings. Preserving the original hinges and gemstone settings benefits from storing the earrings safely when not being worn.

How do I identify French leverback earrings?

French pieces from the Edwardian period often combine 18ct yellow gold and platinum with finely detailed old cut or rose cut diamonds. Assay marks on the mountings can also indicate French origin. Examining the proportion and delicate wirework reveals the characteristic elegance associated with continental workshops of that era.
