What is a vintage lacquered storage cabinet?

A vintage lacquered storage cabinet is a wooden furniture piece finished with layers of glossy lacquer, often decorated with painted Chinoiserie scenes or Japanese motifs. These cabinets range from cocktail cupboards to apothecary chests dating from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They function as practical storage units while serving as prominent decorative statements within a room. Their distinct surface finishes set them apart from standard polished wood furniture.

Where should I place a lacquer cabinet?

These cabinets work well as focal points in living rooms, hallways, or dining spaces where their decorative surfaces can be fully appreciated. Their enclosed storage keeps clutter hidden while displaying the detailed exterior work. Position them away from direct sunlight and strong heat sources to protect the delicate lacquer finish from cracking or fading over time. Pairing them with neutral surroundings allows the rich red, black, or gilt colours to stand out.

How do I identify a Chinoiserie cabinet?

Chinoiserie cabinets feature European interpretations of Chinese art, typically displaying painted figures, pagodas, birds, and floral arrangements on a dark or red lacquered background. These motifs are often applied with raised details or subtle gilt highlights. Examining the underlying wood species, hardware style, and the ageing of the lacquer helps determine the period of manufacture. Many examples date from the early twentieth century and the Victorian era.

What is a Tansu chest?

A Tansu chest is a traditional Japanese storage unit constructed from wood and fitted with robust iron or brass handles, plates, and locking mechanisms. These chests were designed for portability and organised storage in traditional interiors. They bring an understated, utilitarian aesthetic compared to ornate Chinoiserie pieces. Their multiple drawers and sliding panels offer practical organisation for modern homes.
