A tantalus is a locking wooden stand that holds glass decanters securely in place by their necks. It allows guests to view the spirits while preventing access until the key is turned. First patented in the nineteenth century, these security frames were designed for home studies or dining rooms to restrict servants or guests from accessing expensive liquor.

How do I date a spirit set?

Dating relies on stylistic clues, manufacturing techniques, and materials such as the type of wood or silver hallmarks. Victorian and Edwardian pieces often feature heavy oak frames and cut crystal, whereas 1930s Art Deco sets show geometric forms and chrome. Examining the base of the decanters and any maker marks or registration numbers helps narrow down the decade of production.

Are these sets safe for daily use?

Most antique crystal decanters and glasses are fully functional for serving spirits. Care should be taken to hand wash them gently without harsh detergents. Wooden frames and silver-plated stands require occasional polishing and protection from excessive moisture to preserve their condition.

What is a campaign spirit set?

A campaign set is a portable bar designed for travel, typically housed in a leather case or wooden box fitted with glass flasks or decanters. These were used during the nineteenth century by travellers and military officers. The fitted interiors protected the glass bottles from breaking during transit over rough terrain.
