How do I date a decanter set?

Dating relies on stylistic clues like facet cutting patterns, the shape of the stopper, and any accompanying hallmarks on silver mounts. Silver assay marks provide precise years of manufacture. Changes in glass technology and decorative movements, from Victorian etching to Art Deco geometric forms, also help place the items within specific decades.

Are stopper replacements common?

Stoppers were easily misplaced or broken during use, making replacements common in the antique market. Matching a stopper requires checking the ground glass neck for correct fit and matching cut patterns. Original stoppers often share a numbered mark corresponding to the base of the decanter to ensure a factory fit.

How should I clean cut glass barware?

Cleaning requires lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes that can crack old crystal. Soft brushes help clean intricate facet cuts without scratching the surface. Stained interiors respond to soaking with warm water and specialised cleaning beads rather than harsh abrasive agents.

What is a tantalus used for?

A tantalus secures alcoholic spirits under a locking bar while displaying the bottles visibly on a sideboard or desk. The design originated in the nineteenth century to restrict household staff or guests from accessing expensive liquor. Unlocking the mechanism allows the decanters to be lifted free from the frame for pouring.
