What is a lavalier pendant?

A lavalier pendant is a necklace style featuring a central gemstone drop suspended below a smaller decorative element. These pieces typically hang from slender gold chains and date from the early twentieth century. Makers often paired amethysts or peridots with seed pearls in these airy, elongated designs. The construction allows the lower stone to sway gently with movement.

How do I date an Edwardian pendant?

Edwardian pendants generally date between nineteen hundred and nineteen ten, characterised by light openwork frames and delicate platinum or gold settings. Motifs frequently include bows, garlands, and symmetrical floral arrangements. The presence of characteristic gemstones like aquamarine, amethyst, and natural seed pearls strongly points to this period. Hallmarks, where present, help confirm the exact assay office and year.

Are opals durable for daily wear?

Opals possess a lower hardness rating than diamonds or sapphires, requiring mindful care during everyday use. Protective bezel settings help shield the stone from accidental knocks and sharp impacts. Vintage opal pendants often feature robust gold mountings designed to secure the cabochon safely. Removing the necklace during strenuous activities preserves the stone.

What distinguishes Art Deco pendants?

Art Deco pendants rely on geometric lines, symmetrical shapes, and strong colour contrasts established during the nineteen twenties and thirties. Craftsmen utilised platinum and white gold alongside calibrated rubies, emeralds, and onyx. These pieces break away from Edwardian floral curves in favour of bold architectural silhouettes. Such designs pair cleanly cut diamonds with sharp rectangular or teardrop gemstones.
