What is a vintage gemstone drop pendant?

A vintage gemstone drop pendant is a suspended piece of jewellery featuring precious or semi-precious stones set in gold, silver or platinum. These items originate from periods such as the Edwardian era, Art Deco years and mid-century decades. They are designed to hang from chains or attach directly to necklines, showcasing the characteristic lapidary techniques and metalworking styles of their respective timeframes.

How do I date a drop pendant?

Dating relies on examining the metal hallmarks, setting styles, cut of the gemstones, and overall design motifs. Edwardian pieces often display delicate filigree and seed pearls, whilst Art Deco items favour geometric lines and platinum. Consulting the specific gold carat types, such as fifteen carat gold which fell out of standard use after the early twentieth century, also helps narrow down the period of manufacture.

How were these pendants worn historically?

Historically, these pendants were suspended from fine gold or silver chains and worn against the collarbone or lower down the chest depending on the prevailing fashion. They served as daily adornments or evening wear accessories for formal occasions. Many versatile Edwardian examples were constructed with dual fittings, allowing them to transform between pendants and brooches.

How should I care for antique gemstone jewellery?

Caring for antique jewellery requires gentle handling due to the delicate nature of historic settings and softer stones like opals, pearls and turquoises. Cleaning should be done with a soft, dry cloth rather than harsh chemical immersion. Store each piece separately in a lined box to prevent scratching between different items of jewellery.
