A tub chair is an armchair featuring a rounded, high back that curves continuously into the arms, resembling the shape of a deep basin or tub. This enclosed design wraps around the sitter to provide substantial side support and a cosy seating experience.

How do I identify a bergere chair?

A bergere is distinguished by its enclosed wooden frame and upholstered seat, frequently combined with woven cane panels on the sides and back. Unlike standard upholstered armchairs, the wooden framework remains largely exposed and acts as a primary decorative feature.

Where should I place a vintage tub chair?

These armchairs suit sitting rooms, bedrooms and reading nooks where their curved profiles create an inviting conversation area. Pairs work effectively flanking a fireplace or console table, while single chairs fit comfortably in corners as statement reading seats.

How do I care for cane panels?

Cane panels require gentle cleaning with a soft brush and occasional light dampening to prevent the natural rattan fibres from drying out and snapping. Keeping these chairs away from direct heat sources helps preserve the flexibility of the woven material over time.
