How do I mount a heavy coat rack safely?

Secure the rack directly into wall studs or utilise appropriate heavy-duty wall anchors suitable for the weight of the metal and wood. Ensure the mounting screws match the gauge of the pre-drilled holes in the cast backplates to prevent movement under a heavy load of coats.

Can I use these hooks in a bathroom?

Brass, bronze, and nickel-plated hooks suit humid environments like bathrooms or cloakrooms because the metals resist moisture well. Check that any integrated wooden backboards or iron frames feature sealed surfaces to prevent water damage over time.

How do I date a brass coat rack?

Examine the casting quality, screw types, and overall style to determine the period of manufacture. Late nineteenth-century pieces often feature heavier cast brass with hand-chased details, while nineteen-twenties items lean toward Art Deco geometric lines.

What is the difference between a coat rack and a portmanteau?

A standard coat rack consists of hooks mounted on a board or rail for hanging garments and hats. A portmanteau adds a central mirror plate and an overhead storage shelf to the design.
