What is a double door armoire?

A double door armoire is a large freestanding cabinet featuring two full-length doors that open to reveal internal storage space. These pieces serve primarily for hanging garments or holding folded textiles in bedrooms and hallways. Historically, they provided essential wardrobe space in homes lacking built-in closets. Today, they function as both statement furniture and practical storage solutions.

How do I fit an antique wardrobe in a modern room?

Measure your ceiling height and floor space carefully before selecting an armoire, keeping in mind that many older pieces are exceptionally tall and deep. Knockdown versions offer a practical solution because they dismantle into smaller panels for easier transport up stairwells. Position the cabinet away from direct heat sources to prevent the timber and veneers from drying out or warping. Ensure the floor is level so the double doors hang square and close smoothly.

How can I tell the difference between Georgian and Victorian wardrobes?

Georgian wardrobes, dating from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, typically showcase restrained classical proportions, fine mahogany grains, and understated bracket feet. Their design emphasises architectural symmetry and understated elegance. Victorian pieces from the mid-to-late nineteenth century often display heavier proportions, bolder mouldings, and darker finishes. They frequently incorporate larger mirrored doors and more elaborate plinths reflecting industrial manufacturing developments.

What is the difference between an armoire and a compactum?

An armoire is primarily a tall cupboard with open hanging space or simple shelving behind its double doors. The focus remains on vertical storage for long garments. A compactum combines multiple storage formats within one frame, dividing the interior into hanging sections, dedicated drawer stacks, and sliding trays. This layout offers compartmentalised organisation for diverse wardrobe items.
