How do I clean a vintage diamond swirl ring?

Clean your ring using warm water and mild washing liquid with a soft brush to remove dust from behind the stones. Avoid harsh chemicals that might harm softer gems like pearls or rubies set alongside the diamonds. Dry the piece thoroughly with a lint-free cloth before wearing or storing it. Regular checks by a jeweller ensure the swirls and claws hold each stone securely.

Can these rings be resized easily?

Resizing depends on the complexity of the metalwork and whether the swirl pattern extends all the way around the band. Plain gold or platinum shanks at the rear allow a jeweller to adjust the fit without disturbing the main design. Intricate shoulders featuring continuous engraving or pave-set diamonds require specialist skill to alter. Consult a professional who understands antique settings before attempting any adjustment.

Are these rings suitable for daily wear?

Many of these pieces were built for evening or occasional use as cocktail rings, meaning they demand care during routine tasks. Platinum and gold offer durability, but high profile settings and delicate swirls can catch on clothing. Removing the ring during manual work or heavy lifting protects the stones and metalwork. Proper storage in a lined box prevents scratches from other jewellery.

How do I tell an Edwardian ring from an Art Deco one?

Edwardian pieces tend to feature organic motifs, lace-like platinum work, and softer floral curves. They often pair pearls and old cut diamonds in delicate, airy arrangements. Art Deco designs shift toward bold geometry, sharp angles, and symmetrical repetition. These later pieces embrace heavier platinum settings and structured bombé or step-cut profiles.
