How do I identify an older rocking horse?

Look for construction methods such as hand-carved wooden bodies, traditional iron brackets, and early painted finishes consistent with nineteenth or early twentieth century production. Examine the materials used for the mane and tail, as natural horsehair typically indicates older manufacture compared to synthetic replacements.

Were these horses meant for children to ride?

These pieces were built as robust children's toys and ride-on items designed to withstand active use in nurseries and playrooms. Over time, many surviving examples transition into decorative sculptures displayed in living spaces rather than functioning playthings.

What is the difference between rockers and a safety stand?

Traditional rocking horses sit upon curved wooden rockers that allow the entire horse to glide back and forth across the floor during motion. Stand-mounted versions are fixed within a swinging wooden frame that keeps the horse stable in one place while rocking.

How should I care for a painted wooden horse?

Keep the carved wooden sculpture away from direct sunlight and steady heat sources to protect the aged wood and delicate painted surfaces from cracking. Dust the surface gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid applying modern chemical polishes to historic paint layers.
