How do I hang a heavy mirror sconce safely?

Wall fixtures with carved wooden frames and metal arms carry significant weight that requires proper masonry or stud anchoring. Secure the hanging wire or brackets directly to wall studs using rated fixings. Ensure the mounting height places the candle branches at a safe distance from curtains or low ceilings. Professional installation is advisable for large giltwood pieces.

Can I burn real candles in vintage sconces?

Using actual wax candles provides the atmospheric illumination intended by the original makers of these girandoles. Monitor the flame height to prevent heat damage to the antique frame or the silvered mirror glass behind. Many modern collectors opt for high-quality battery-operated taper candles to eliminate soot and wax drips entirely. This preserves the delicate gilt surface from accidental burns.

How do I clean antique giltwood frames?

Dust carved wooden surfaces gently with a soft, dry artist brush or ostrich feather duster to remove loose particles. Avoid using water, chemical sprays, or abrasive cloths on giltwood because moisture lifts the fragile gold leaf. Professional conservators should handle any deep cleaning or repairs to flaking gesso. Regular dry maintenance prevents dust accumulation in the carved crevices.

What is the difference between a girandole and a wall mirror?

A standard wall mirror functions purely to reflect light and provide an image without attached lighting fixtures. A girandole specifically incorporates candle branches or arms extending from the frame. This functional combination of light source and reflector distinguishes girandoles from ordinary hanging looking glasses. Both forms appear frequently in nineteenth and early twentieth century designs.
