What is a vintage candle plate?

A vintage candle plate refers to silver plated trays, bases and saucer-like holders designed to catch wax beneath a candle. These items include chambersticks, desk sticks and low table pieces. They emerged from various periods spanning the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The category includes both functional domestic accessories and decorative dining table centrepieces.

How do I date a silver plated candlestick?

Dating relies on stylistic clues such as neoclassical columns, rococo scrolls or art nouveau leaf forms. Construction methods also indicate age, with older pieces showing fused copper beneath worn silver. Maker marks stamped onto the metal provide further chronological clues. Examining the weight, proportion and manufacturing technique helps narrow down the period.

What is Old Sheffield plate?

Old Sheffield plate is an early form of plating where a silver sheet is fused to a copper ingot. Smiths then rolled the composite metal into sheets to fabricate candlesticks and lighting. This technique precedes electroplating and often reveals a reddish copper tint where the silver layer has worn thin over generations of polishing.

How were chambersticks used?

Chambersticks served as portable lighting devices carried through rooms and corridors before the invention of electric lighting. The wide saucer plate caught dripping wax to protect hands and furniture. Many examples feature a small ring handle and a socket to hold the taper securely. Some incorporate a conical snuffer resting directly on the tray.
