Where were these carpets made?

Production occurred across various provinces and villages within Anatolia, encompassing urban centres like Ushak alongside rural settlements in the east and west. Each district developed distinct regional styles and colour preferences. Weavers utilised local materials and traditional patterns particular to their specific communities, allowing scholars to trace origins back to towns such as Konya, Bergama, and Milas.

How do I care for my rug?

Protect the textile by placing it in areas with moderate foot traffic and away from direct, prolonged sunlight to prevent dye fading. Regular gentle vacuuming without a beating brush bar removes embedded dust safely. Professional cleaning tailored for antique wool textiles ensures the longevity of the hand-spun pile and foundation. Avoid harsh chemical treatments or excessive moisture.

What is a prayer rug?

A prayer rug is a portable devotional floor covering characterised by a pointed arch or mihrab motif at one end. This design element symbolises the direction of prayer. Weavers in regions like Konya, Bergama, and Milas frequently produced these compact formats for personal or domestic devotional use.

How do I distinguish regional styles?

Regional attribution relies on examining specific border motifs, colour combinations, and structural characteristics unique to particular Turkish towns or nomadic groups. For instance, Milas pieces often display distinct star borders. Kurdish tribal pieces from eastern provinces show different structural tightness and geometric vocabulary compared to large decorative Ushak carpets from western workshops.
